The similarities between Satoshi Kon’s Paprika and Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Paprika, a cautionary anime tale where a dream recording device called the DC-Mini is stolen from a psychiatric research facility and the thief causes mayhem by intertwining the patients’ nightmares with the staff’s dreams, helped inspire Nolan’s Inception.
I was just telling someone who kept insisting that Inception was so original with no other influences that they should watch Paprika. But you know, don’t take my word for it.
Kon was a masterful director whose films don’t get the recognition they deserve here in North America. Compare Kon’s Perfect Blue to Aronofsky’s Black Swan.
^^^ all of this.
I saw the Inception trailer and immediately had a surge of irritation that only intensified when I saw the actual movie. Was it good? Yes. It was damn good. And I won’t claim that it was a “rip off.” But it bothers me that Paprika still goes rather unknown, while Inception gets all of these originality points. Of course, Paprika was always based on a novel by the same name, etc. etc.
Also, I’ll just warn everyone now that I will always reblog anything crossing my dash that pertains to Satoshi Kon. He was an absolute god of his craft.
He really was a creative genius. He is sorely missed.
Forever reblog Satoshi Kon
